  1. He is regarded as overly progressive by many Cardinals, so maybe he read it as a commentary on how the politics of religion play to baser human emotions whereas divine love exceeds our grasp.

    Or it is not actually the Roman Pope.

  2. He’s the real deal, all right. It would be amazing if your other suggestion were true, but 12 years of Catholic schooling tells me otherwise. High religious mucky-mucks have no sense of irony, at least not in public.
